Universal's American Gangster to be next big HD DVD exclusive

Even with the tide apparently shifting in Blu-ray Disc's favor, the HD DVD camp isn't about to relent in the on-going high-definition format war. HD DVD still commands a significant portion of exclusive content and the most affordable hardware, giving the format a fighting chance – and nobody believes in HD DVD more than Universal Studios executive vice president Ken Graffeo, who also serves as the co-president of the HD DVD Promotional Group.

The HD DVD Group was rather mum on Warner's surprise announcement right before CES to go Blu-ray Disc exclusive and cancelled its Sunday press conference. Graffeo, speaking to BetaNews, explains, "We heard about the whole move when everyone else did – when a lot of us were on planes flying to CES in Las Vegas ... If we had our press event on Monday, it would have been different, but because it was right there on Sunday and we heard Friday afternoon we couldn't even get to everybody ...

They were too busy hiding in cellars.

Although Halloween began as a Celtic event to ward off evil spirits during the harvest, and later became a quasi-Christian holiday honouring saints, little seems left today of its spiritual roots. That is unless you happen to revere horror films or be a true worshipper of chocolate bars.

So, slowly but surely, Jewish children have come out of the basement. They've donned masks and held out bags for treats. In so doing, the community has shed its fears of the past and begun to participate enthusiastically in the world around it.

There are, of course, religious reasons not to celebrate a holiday that has its roots in paganism, but many Jews don't want a history lesson when it comes to their kids. They just want some innocent fun.

Councilman MikeK Recalls Knievel Action Figure

Top: Young MikeK playing with Evel Knievel action figure; bottom: MikeK receives inspiration from his childhood friends before leaving for a Coeur d'Alene City Council meeting.

I had a classic Evel Knievel motorcycle riding action figure when I was a kid. The stunts my brothers and I would stage for that motorcycle toy were legendary (riding out a second story window, chasing the dog around the house without getting chewed to ribbons, you name it). RIP Evel. I wonder what happened to Steve Austin, the Six Million Dollar Man who played the role of Evel's arch-nemesis in the boyhood action figure wars?/Councilman MikeK.

Question: What was your favorite action figure/doll when you were little?

Hitch 'em up, move 'em out: Trail ride signals return of the rodeo

On Friday, the streets around Houston's Memorial Park resembled something out of a John Wayne movie as 13 trail rides with some 4,000 riders converged on the city for Go Texan Day and the precursor to the start of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

As is tradition, all of the trail rides converge on Memorial Park before the rodeo parade, which starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

It's an annual celebration of all things Texas that had its beginnings 56 years ago.
