CORNING — Two men being sought in connection with the armed abduction and robbery last year of a woman in the Chico Wal-Mart parking lot were captured Friday after robbing a Corning business.

In a press release, Corning police cited that Ryan Touvall, 19, and Michael Fowler, 23, stole a vehicle from a residence in Corning, then used it to make their escape after robbing the Travel Center of America early Friday morning.

A clerk at the truck stop said the robbers held him at gunpoint.

Touvall was taken into custody at a recreational vehicle park on Barham Avenue. Later Friday, Fowler was found hiding inside a trailer in the park.

Both suspects were booked into the Tehama County Jail in Red Bluff on suspicion of armed robbery and receiving stolen property.

Lear wins appeal in patent suit

Lear Corp., once the largest supplier of car interiors, won an appeals-court ruling that allows it to continue to provide Car2U garage-door openers to automakers until a Johnson Controls Inc. patent-infringement lawsuit is decided.

A trial judge had barred Lear from selling the Car2U device, saying there was a good chance Johnson Controls and patent owner Chamberlain Group Inc. would win the suit. Closely held Chamberlain owns the patent and Johnson Controls is the exclusive licensee.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington today said the judge erred in defining one of the key terms of the patent. The court threw out the order barring sales and sent the case back for further review.

Mark Martin, the series' all-time wins leader (47) added to that record with his 29th career pole at Michigan last Saturday, breaking the first-place tie between him and Tommy Ellis (28). .

For the individual who died and for all friends and family of anyone who has died involving snowmobiles, they have my sincerest sympathies. But, we can't make laws limiting the entertainment and livelihood of millions to save the lives of a few poeple making bad choices. In addition, think of the costs to enforce all these laws to make sure no on ever dies on a snowmobile (or other recreational activity - down hill skiing!!!!!). Where do we station police and at what sacrifie (less police elsewhere or more taxes) to prevent these isolated incidents? This is a basic principle for all activities where there are some risks. If we had a law prohibiting two passengers on a single passenger sled, would that solve our problem? Would handcuffing the snwomobile manufacturers with "slower" sleds help? What is the politically correct, gov't limited, top speed of a new snowmobile to ride double while drunk? At what blood alchohol level? Why not limit speed so even the inexperienced sledder won't get hurt? Better yet, we should require the machines performance to be throttled back as the machine gets older because something may wear out.

Jersey search teams take a break

Search teams have confirmed there is a second bricked up chamber and are investigating reports that there are two more next to that.

A police spokesman said there would be a scaled-down operation at the site on Sunday, with some officers carrying out basic work. The forensic teams would not be on site.

On Saturday, Mr Harper gave a "stark" warning to anyone looking to intimidate victims after one was targeted by a former care worker.

He warned anyone considering approaching witnesses or victims that police would deal with it as a "serious criminal offence".

Argentine Mascherano signs new Liverpool deal

He joined Liverpool on loan from fellow Premier League club West Ham United in January 2007 before helping his new team reach the Champions League final in May. Liverpool spokesman Ian Cotton said: "Javier Mascherano came to Liverpool on a fixed term contract under an agreement disclosed to and approved by both the Football Association and Premier League. "His contract has now been extended under the provisions of that agreement... We have no further comment to make," he added in an email to Reuters. "Our overriding thought is we are delighted to have signed a world class player on a long contract," chief executive Rick Parry said on the Web site. Mascherano joined West Ham in a controversial double move with compatriot Carlos Tevez in August 2006 in which they were loaned to the London club by Media Sports Investments (MSI).
