The long road home

The front door creaks and the roof sags a little, adding to the feeling of being out in the country, which it most definitely is.

Taking a look inside, the first thing that is noticeable, besides the obvious recording equipment, are the photos on the walls, many of them familiar and famous faces. Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill, Doc Watson, and the who's who of the Nashville and Grand 'Ol Opry scene. A Google of Parker's name on the internet will turn up Parker's name beside every one of these artists and then some.

Parker moved to Nashville with songwriter J.D. Rudd in 1974 after playing locally and regionally with several different bands. Parker ended up as a backup engineer in a recording studio. Then, he got a break.

"A drummer couldn't make it one day, and I ended up playing with some musicians that I knew (in the studio)," he said.

After 4 years, it's the day of 'leaplings'

She answered it was just that my child wouldn't have an actual birthday most years if I were to deliver on Leap Day," said the Ellicott City resident.

Eight years ago today, Durning did just that. She and her husband, Ben Burnet, welcomed Ani into their lives at Howard County General Hospital about 3 a.m. on her due date, just as predicted.

Teacher busted in coke ring

David Janes, the DARE officer for the Cheyenne Police Department, immediately recognized Mondello as a Bain teacher when contacted Thursday. He said he spent one hour per week for 14 straight weeks in her class talking to her students about the dangers of using drugs.Janes repeated his disappointment in Mondello's arrest multiple times, saying her alleged actions undermine the program."It's absolutely disappointing because DARE is all about helping the kids make healthy choices," he said.Mondello attended a DARE celebration Jan. 25 at Cheyenne's Central High that culminated the end of the semester, he said. The event included a musical performance, a keynote speaker and the distribution of awards to top students. Janes said the event was important because it affirmed that the students made a commitment to stay drug-free.Identifying suitable role models is a part of the program, and Janes said he is now considering a return visit to Bain to discuss Mondello's alleged drug activity with her students."They (Bain) were one of the schools that we had quite a bit of contact with those kids and spent a lot of time with them," he said.

China dominates at team table tennis tournament in warm-up for ...

Pressure has been mounting on China as the Olympics approach. Table tennis is its national sport, and anything less than gold in the Chinese capital will be simply unacceptable.

"We gained a lot of valuable experience for the Olympics playing at this tournament in Guangzhou," men's coach Liu Guoliang told China Central Television.

The team championships brought nearly all the world's top players to southern China, and some of the matchups are likely to be repeated at the Olympics in August.

Despite China's overall dominance, the tournament revealed a few weaknesses in its game. Inexperience was a major factor as world No. 3 Guo Yue was unable to find her rhythm and lost 3-0 to Singapore's Li Jiawei in the women's final Saturday.

The 19-year-old Guo became increasingly frustrated as eighth-ranked Li, a former Chinese player, foiled her normally aggressive game.

Alan Gevins knows he can measure attention and memory, if only he ...

Alan Gevins' top-floor corner office at SAM Technology looks out on the Financial District. This isn't bad real estate for a scientist who has gotten by on grants for 35 years. What he needs now is for one of these capitalists to look back and see the market for Gevins' brain meter.

"The little black box is a device that measures signals in the brain that regulate attention and memory. There is a headset and a notebook computer and the rest is all embedded in the software that's on our server. There are no wires from the person to the computer. We call it the SAM exam. It stands for Sustained Attention and Memory brain function exam. The company is called SAM Technology. I named it after Uncle Sam, because all of our funding comes from federal research grants.

The point is there is no good medical test now that measures how clearly someone can think, how well their brain is functioning.
