Bottled Water Boycotts: Back-to-the-Tap Movement Gains Momentum

From San Francisco to New York to Paris, city governments, high-class restaurants, schools, and religious groups are ditching bottled water in favor of what comes out of the faucet. With people no longer content to pay 1,000 times as much for bottled water, a product no better than water from the tap, a backlash against bottled water is growing.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors, which represents some 1,100 American cities, discussed at its June 2007 meeting the irony of purchasing bottled water for city employees and for city functions while at the same time touting the quality of municipal water. The group passed a resolution sponsored by Mayors Gavin Newsom of San Francisco, Rocky Anderson of Salt Lake City, and R. T. Rybak of Minneapolis that called for the examination of bottled water's environmental impact.

Why the fuss over pennies?

Just don't take them to City Hall. Brian Burza learned that last month when he went to pay his $20 parking ticket with a briefcase pouch full of loose change. "It was mostly pennies," Burza said. "There were a couple nickels and dimes in there, but it was mainly pennies that I had counted out." But the clerk at the payment center wouldn't take them. Neither would the supervisor, Marcus Chapple, who told Burza to get them changed at a bank. When Burza refused to and insisted that the city accept his pennies because they are U.S. currency, Burza says Chapple put the pennies in a bucket and told his co-workers that there would be free pennies for people that day. "When I saw him put everything in the bucket, I just left my ticket there and said that I considered it paid," Burza said. Still the ticket wasn't marked as paid until Assistant City Administrator Julia Scott-Valdez took a call from the Rockford Register Star Wednesday, two weeks after Burza left his pennies at City Hall.

Pittsburgh 38, Baltimore 7

- Ben Roethlisberger has already set a career season-high in touchdown passes by totaling 20 in just eight games, besting his personal best of 18 last year. He currently owns the second-most passing touchdowns, one ahead of Tony Romo's 19. After throwing for five scores against Baltimore, he's projected to pass for 40 touchdowns. Of note, he's already thrown for four touchdowns twice this season. He'll have a chance to duplicate another big touchdown day when he meets Cleveland's worst-ranked pass defense on the road next game.

R-rated games may be on shelves soon

The games industry has long argued that the censorship regime is unnecessarily draconian and prevents adults from making their own decisions as to the type of content they consume. It has called for the classification system to be harmonised across all types of media.

Pearson happy with first point

Saints were conceding a lot of needless free kick around the edge of their own box but were fortunate the delivery from Morris was so poor.

Pearson's side were too often just lumping the ball forward aimlessly and were showing little sign of much invention to break Scunthorpe down.

In fairness the home side were only a little better in what had been a very poor first half all round. But they were thrown a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty.

Saints couldn't quite get a corner clear and as Paterson tracked across the area with the ball Jhon Viafara brought him down.

On 40 minutes Crosby ran up to take the spot kick but Davis got down to his right to save it but the ball just came back out into the path of Crosby who made no mistake the second time round and made it 1-0.
