Has the mayor lost his mind (Feb. 20 article, "Tax double whammy looms in '09 / Memphis, Shelby County sound early alarm of property hike"). Property taxpayers aren't facing a "double whammy"; they're facing a "triple whammy."

Mayor Willie Herenton's depressing prediction that an increase in the property tax rate next year is "almost inescapable" disregards the fact that 2009 is also a reassessment year for Shelby County. Along with the higher property taxes that this mayor is proposing comes the additional burden that property taxpayers will face from an artificial increase in values of their property once again, increasing the tax liability even more.

With property tax you pay more when your home's assessed value increases, regardless of changes to your income or whether you ever realize increased gain when you sell your home.

Colonial-style captain's house

There is just something about an old house. The detail, the materials, the elegance and formality all come together in our historic Home of the Week.

An old colonial-style captain's house stands tall and proud at 8 Lafayette St. in Fairhaven's Poverty Point. The main house was built in 1835, during the rise of the whaling industry in Greater New Bedford. In recent years, an addition helped bring the kitchen up to date and add some valuable living area, all while keeping with the architectural style of the home.

A letter from the Chairman of Watford Football Club

I have never really discussed my personal situation and finances in public before but I will now as I think it is relevant. I've invested in shares in Watford to the tune of £4.3m plus I also loaned the Club a further £2m. Currently we are valued, according to our AIM listing, at £9.44m (shares 21.5p). This puts my current equity valuation at approximately just under £1.6m, so at present on paper I have lost £2.7m. I am pleased to say my children are still speaking to me.

On top of this, because of my obsession with turning this Club around over the last five years, I have completely neglected my other businesses. Simpson Travel has virtually stood still and suffered from my lack of day-to-day involvement. My other business based abroad has stagnated and I've had to put it on hold for the last five years whilst I put all my energy into securing a safe and long-term future for Watford Football Club.

BINGHAM FARMS -- A local public accounting firm wants to help tenants in office buildings avoid camouflaged costs associated with lobby or parking lot maintenance.

Maddox Ungar Silberstein has rolled out a new consulting service called Real Estate Analytics, which is designed to study commercial real estate leases to find any discrepancies when it comes to Common Area Maintenance fees and charges.

"For most tenants, this is a significant cost that isn't being reviewed," said Dave Kobylarek, who was brought aboard to handle the analysis of lease agreements. Kobylarek worked in real estate development for eight years and also has a public accounting background.

Transport firms clash

Relatives of patient Kirpal Singh, who was admitted to the hospital on February 28 with respiratory problems, alleged that wrong medication had caused the death of the patient, who was otherwise improving and was to be discharged later in the day.

The irate relatives of Kirpal Singh, a resident of Sufian Bagh, manhandled Dr Deepak Rajput and nurse Manpreet, whom they charged with administering a wrong injection, resulting in the instant death of Kirpal Singh.

Dr R.K. Goyal, earlier treating the patient, was on leave today. In his absence, Dr Rajput was attending to the patient.

The hospital management, however, denied allegations of wrong medication, maintaining that the patient suffering several complications had had a heart attack, resulting in his death.

The doctors claimed that the patient was put on a ventilator but could not be saved.
