In Flint, Michigan, burglaries and robberies on the rise as violent ...

Alberta Douglas, who coordinates the South Area Crime Watch, enlists citizen volunteers to do their own patrols through neighborhoods.

Douglas, 69, has become even more vigilant since her home was burglarized twice in January. The first time, a snowblower was stolen from her garage; the second time, someone broke into her home while she slept and stole her purse.

"I look out at the 90-year-old neighbor's home every day," she said, adding that she isn't scared for herself but for others in the neighborhood. "I get up all night to make sure she's OK."

Douglas said she owns a shotgun and that the next time someone tries to steal from her, "They will be facing that."

Mary S. Williams, a friend of Douglas, lives on the north side end of town, but said the problem is everywhere.

Whittaker Guns in Owensboro invites customers to do more than look

"Ninety-five percent of the people who pick up a gun aren't going to buy one," said Whittaker, the senior member of Whittaker Guns, a family-owned and -operated gun shop near Owensboro. "Of course there are some that do. But everyone's welcome to look at anything that's out. That's why they're there.

"I don't keep any guns back. They're all for sale. There may be one of the same that's in the back. But one kind of everything we have is out."

Any gun shop that intends to stay in business keeps the merchandise where customers can see it.

It's Whittaker's display tactics that give his store its unique flavor; that and the large, diverse inventory.

Whittaker estimated he has 5,000 to 6,000 guns in the store, which he claims makes it the largest gun store in Kentucky.

Gettysburg's Warrior Stadium project on view

Gettysburg Area School District unveiled a sketch plan for its new Warrior Stadium, submitting drawings to the Straban Township Planning Commission.

The sketch plan, displayed Wednesday, is a typical first step for a large project such as a new stadium, which entered its planning stage last April. Architects from Derck and Edson Associates will present preliminary and final plans to the planning commission as the project continues.

The sketch plan's purpose is to give the planning commission and community members a feel for the design of the project, and the opportunity to ask questions or address any initial concerns they might have.

"In reality, it's a courtesy, but the function is to inform everybody of what's to come," said Alan Zepp, chairman of the planning commission.

So far, so good on Highway 40 shutdown

They also said the evening rush built up more quickly, and was over quicker, than the morning commute.

"We're happy with how the system has performed," Rahn said. "We still haven't faced a 100 percent normal traffic day yet, but the corrections that have to be made are minor."

One change will be prohibit traffic from going north onto I-170 from Eager Road. That traffic will be diverted to Brentwood Boulevard, then north to Galleria Parkway for the next ramp to the Inner Belt. Officials said southbound and northbound I-170 traffic jammed at the Eager intersection. They have changed the signals to allow more time for flow from southbound I-170 onto Eager. .

Fatal shooting: First picture of victim

In this day and age do you really think the police would bring race into the matter in regards to dealing with the crime at hand? If they wasn't bothered about solving crimes involving the ethnic minority then they wouldn't have a dedicated section who deal with Black on black crime. .
